Tile Doctor International’s technical roots reach back to specialist anti-slip surface-treatment development undertaken in South Africa during the early 1990s. The TILE DOCTOR commercial identity was established from 1995, and by 1997 Tile Doctor International was operating as a division of the Qualichem Group.
AST-95 emerged from this early work as a controlled two-stage chemical treatment developed to improve slip resistance on suitable tiled and silica-containing surfaces. Its technical development was protected by United States Patent No. 5,842,815, granted on 1 December 1998 under the title Chemical Treatment of Treading Surfaces. From these specialist origins, Tile Doctor International developed into a broader system for cleaning, restoring, treating, sealing, protecting and maintaining tiled and hard surfaces.
The modern range is organised around four core surface-care stages: Strip It, Clean It, Seal It and Shine It, supported by a fifth Speciality category for targeted surface problems. The system includes products for removing old coatings, waxes and build-up; everyday and heavy-duty cleaning; grout care; sealing and protecting tiles, grout and porous surfaces; restoring and maintaining completed finishes; and addressing specific problems such as oil, grease and mould.
Within the Speciality category, AST-95 remains Tile Doctor International’s flagship professional technology. Unlike a conventional film-forming coating or temporary anti-slip layer, AST-95 chemically treats the surface itself and does not create a coating that can peel or flake. It requires correct substrate assessment, testing and controlled professional application.
Proudly manufactured in South Africa, Tile Doctor International serves homeowners, flooring contractors, specialist applicators, facility managers, cleaning professionals, retailers and other technical users. When Qualichem acquired Genkem in 1999, Tile Doctor International and Genkem became part of the same wider Group portfolio, strengthening local manufacture, formulation support, technical service and national distribution. The renewed range returns the brand to its historic Tile Doctor International identity while presenting a clear five-category system for professional, trade and retail markets.
